ALL work at home jobs are scams. It’s ridiculous to assume any real company is going to pay anyone for working at home in their pajamas.
There are stories every day by some career expert using these words.
Another thing I see in my Google searches are references on every page having to do with any kind of work-at-home or self-employment subjects that contain a phrase like, “Avoid Work From Home Jobs. 98.3% Make Money Sites Are Scams. Don’t Pay Until You Read This Guide.” When you visit the guide you will be referred to one or more landing pages that exhort you to join some program they say has been certified by an unknown organization to be scam-free. All the ones I have seen require some payment up front, maybe $50 or $100. Go figure! How do we know all of these aren’t scams or “opportunities” that will not work for anyone but the promoters?
This article from December, 2007, outlines some changes in company thinking about workers at home. They even list a few legitimate home work organizations, many of which we review later. As the Internet matures, conventional employers are trying telecommuting as a way to attract and retain skilled employees. New Internet companies are starting up to take advantage of the corporate culture of offshoring services not requiring face-to-face meetings. These new companies are bringing some of these jobs back to America at a lower cost than companies pay to workers in Southeast Asia. Customer service is the first to begin coming back to American employees, and most of the companies in our review offer this opportunity that can be performed from home.
When you are looking for a work-at-home job be sure to search Google, job boards, and other sources to be sure the company offering employment is legitimate. You might use search terms like “home office,” “telecommute,” or “work from home.” One search I always do when checking opportunities or new products is “ABC Company sucks.” If there is any alleged bad stuff out there you may be sure this will uncover it. If you do this, be aware many complaints come from disgruntled former employees, users, or result from credit card disputes. You have to use your own judgment about these comments.
Avoid companies that require up-front fees. The only legitimate charge could be for a background check required by some. Training should be free, and they may even pay you because they want to hire and retain the very best people with the greatest knowledge of what the company does.
Before accepting any home job, understand what it may cost just to work from home. You will need a telephone, computer with adequate connection to the Internet, and maybe some other items. The company will tell you what is required up front where it describes the job. Be sure you can afford this before you apply. Many of these expenses can be written off for tax purposes; check with your financial adviser before claiming any deductions.
Determine exactly why you want to work from your home. If it’s because you want to spend more time with your children, don’t apply for anything likely to be highly stressful or require very long hours. A lot of the jobs we review allow choice of how much and when you work. Pay attention to these details when you research the job. Whatever you do, be prepared to make a schedule and follow it. Working alone requires discipline for success and a schedule makes you be in control of when you work.
These job postings are for legitimate work and most of them request only an e-mail address to send more information; this is fine, but it may be wise to get a free throw away e-mail address that you can easily stop if the spam begins to build up. When you accept a job, you can use your normal address. It’s just not a good idea to spread an e-mail address all over the Internet. I communicate with a lot of Websites and individuals; over the years this has attracted untold amounts of spam. Even with spam filters I still have to go through several thousand e-mails every single day. So, be advised to guard your e-mail address.
When looking at posted job openings pay attention to the list of keywords they provide. Many of them include “business opportunity.” This is OK if you want to start your own business, but if you are just looking for a real job you can do from your home, go on to something that sounds like real work.
Now, let’s look at some companies that offer work from home. Near the URL of each one there is the Alexa ranking for this Website.
